We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated scientist to establish and lead an independent research laboratory at the EMBL Epigenetics and Neurobiology Unit in Rome.
EMBL provides a unique environment for young scientists to conduct ground-breaking research and technology development across the life sciences. builds on our unique scientific model to promote the study of biological ecosystems at the molecular level, applying expertise in molecular biology to study life in its natural context. Within this overall structure, the EMBL Epigenetics & Neurobiology Unit applies a wide range of modern technologies to diverse problems in developmental and organismal biology focusing on the laboratory mouse. Research groups within the unit explore topics in epigenetics, gene regulation, sensory processing, and circuits and behavior. The appointed Group Leader will benefit from access to local state-of-the-art facilities for imaging and histology, gene editing and viral engineering, flow cytometry, gnotobiosis, and mouse transgenesis, as well as access to complementary core facilities across EMBL, including advanced sequencing and metabolomics.

Your role
You will develop an independent and innovative research programme to address important questions in the molecular mechanisms of environmental responses. You will integrate into and take full advantage of the unique research environment and the comprehensive resources available at EMBL. This broad call invites applications from candidates with research plans in diverse fields including, but not limited to: functional genomics and epigenomics, development, biochemistry, evolution, organ physiology, brain function, or behavior.
The selected group leader will thrive within EMBL’s vibrant multidisciplinary community and benefit from extensive opportunities for collaboration across research, service, and technology development teams. EMBL appoints Group Leaders early in their career and provides a highly supportive environment for researchers in their first independent position, including the provision of a “Lead your Lab” management training program. The Group Leader package includes significant core funding, technician support, and access to students from EMBL’s International PhD Programme so that researchers can pursue ambitious and ground-breaking research programs. Furthermore, limited teaching and administrative responsibilities provide a scientific environment that is particularly attractive for researchers with families.
You have
You have a doctoral degree and demonstrable ability and ambition to make fundamental biological discoveries and/or methodological advances. You are dedicated to developing positive relationships and providing leadership and guidance to team members. Your research will synergize with the activities at EMBL Rome and leverage and contribute to ongoing research across EMBL. We welcome research programs using experimental or computational tools, or both.
You might also have
Although current research at the Unit is focused on the laboratory mouse as an experimental organism, we welcome research proposals that also involve other mammalian model organisms or human organoids. We are particularly interested in proposals that fall under the umbrella of EMBL’s
Human Ecosystems Transversal Theme
. EMBL has a long history of fostering technology development and we welcome applications from persons interested in molecular or computational tool development.

Contract length: 5 years, renewable to a maximum of 9 years
Salary: Grade 9, monthly salary from EUR 5.460 per month after tax, excl. pension and health insurance contributions.

In addition, you will be asked to provide your potential interest in a maximum of two transversal themes. The recruitment panel is composed of a balanced mix of internal and external members. The shortlisted candidates will be invited to on-site interviews at least three weeks before the interview date.
