As an Data Protection Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the storage and backup infrastructure that supports UniCredit applications. This role requires deep technical knowledge in backup and storage technologies such as Commvault, NetApp NAS, S3-compatible storage, and software defined storage like VMware vSAN. You will work with internal stakeholders and service providers to ensure optimal performance, cost-efficiency, and alignment with business needs.
To be successful in this role Google and Azure cloud skills are needed and fluency in English is essential

What you'll be doing

Storage & Backup Infrastructure Management:
  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise backup and storage solutions.
  • Administer and optimize backup systems including Commvault, IBM Spectrum Protect (TSM), and Veritas NetBackup.
  • Manage storage platforms including NetApp NAS, S3-compatible storage, and software defined storage like VMware vSAN.
  • Automate repetitive tasks related to backup/storage provisioning and monitoring using scripts and tools.
Backup Operations:
  • Monitor backup job health and manage recovery testing and actual restore procedures.
  • Define and enforce policies for retention, encryption, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Storage Administration:
  • Provision storage, manage snapshots, monitor performance, and address system health issues.
  • Ensure proper storage lifecycle management and capacity forecasting.
  • Ensure defined RPO and RTO targets for the applications in scope are always met.
Service Management:
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to guarantee optimal performance and cost efficiency.
  • Support business case development and evaluation for storage and backup projects.
  • Assist in project planning, vendor assessments, and initiative prioritization.
International Collaboration & Communication:
  • Engage with globally distributed teams and stakeholders to ensure alignment across IT domains.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal, in meetings, escalations, war rooms.
Incident & Problem Management:
  • Provide 24/7 support on a rotation basis for storage and backup incidents.
  • Lead root cause analyses and maintain runbooks for recovery and failover scenarios.
Documentation & Compliance:
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date technical documentation and operational guides.
    • Support audits and compliance assessments by providing necessary data and technical evidence.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience managing enterprise storage and backup infrastructures.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of Commvault, Google Cloud and Azure Cloud.
  • Experience with NetApp NAS, S3-compatible storage solutions, VMware vSAN.
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix systems administration and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, Ansible, Terraform).
  • Solid understanding of ITIL-based service management and enterprise architecture practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing external IT providers and evaluating their performance.
  • Proven ability to contribute to business case development and project ROI evaluations.
    • Fluent English required; additional language skills are a plus.
